The First Large-scale Floating Solar Farm in Singapore Revolutionises Environmental Sustainability in the Utility Industry

The First Large-scale Floating Solar Farm in Singapore Revolutionises Environmental Sustainability in the Utility Industry

On the 14th of July 2021, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially opened the first floating solar farm in Singapore. This 60 MWp floating solar photovoltaic system spans 45 hectares on Tengeh Reservoir, which is equivalent to the area of 45 football fields (this covers one-third of the Tenger Reservoir). It houses 122,000 solar panels with a lifespan of 25 years each. This Floating Solar Farm is described as one of the largest in the world in a joint press release by Sembcorp Industries and PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency.

This buzz-worthy project is commemorated as a revolutionary endeavour of Singapore towards preserving environmental sustainability in the water utility industry and highlighted Singapore as one of the very few countries that capitalise on 100% green water systems. It offsets 32 kilotonnes of carbon emissions annually and can power up 16,000 4-room HDB households. This project plays an essential part in the national 2025 vision of quadrupling solar energy deployment in Singapore. Singapore succeeded in empowering solar capacity by more than 7 times since 2015 and became one of the globally recognised solar-dense cities in the world after this event.

The Prime Minister further elaborates that this project results from 10 years of hard work and “it has no significant impact on water quality nor wildlife”. This project is undoubtedly a creative balance between harnessing modern technology and preserving nature. It encourages carbon neutrality and motivates water utilities and other industry practitioners to follow greener initiatives to deliver utility services.
